Another online meetup is behind us, which we decided to organize due to the appearance of a new version of The Scrum Guide, which (as those in the IT world know very well) is used to provide software solutions. We are aware how important it can be to present the changes introduced and their impact on agile projects, therefore our speaker prepared such an overview. In VM.PL we use Agile methodology for several years, to meet the requirements of the modern world, we see its potential and how much good it can do for the development of the company.

January 12th 2021 was the day that Adobe Flash Player stopped working. It was known for a long time that this would happen. There were articles about this, in the months leading up to the end of 2020, browsers displayed big warnings and made it harder and harder to use systems based on this technology. So everyone knew that extinction of this technology is basically days away.
But what if you still need to use a system (or maybe play a game) that uses Flash and has not moved towards a more future-proofed technology? We had to deal with this situation with one of our clients. We had advised some time ago switching to more modern solutions but the decision path took too long. And the day has come.
New Year, new challenges! We have just become an official member of another technology cluster from the DACH region. In December 2020 we joined the IT-Cluster (ITC) of Austria, which belongs to the agency Business Upper Austria -OÖ Wirtschaftsagentur GmbH. We also remain a member of the German association SIBB.
The IT-Cluster of Austria is a platform for cooperation in information technology and software in Upper Austria. This cluster is a collaborative network for the IT sector, in particular for the digital software industry and a competence centre for digitalisation in all sectors.
Their main topics are information security, sales and digital business models. As a network for the IT and software industry, their stated goal is to increase the competitiveness of their partner companies.
We are very pleased to have joined the ITC. We are confident that this will allow us to establish new business contacts in Austria, which has been our main focus for years. We are also looking forward to new and interesting initiatives and events organized by the cluster, which we hope to be able to participate in soon.
We have for some time been cooperating with PCG Academia (https://pcgacademia.pl) on a new project called VM.PL Academic Software.
PCG Academia specializes in developing IT services for universities. It has been successfully operating on the international education market for over 30 years.
Thanks to this cooperation, we will be able to promote and sell our educational products as well as those of PCG Academia and its partners on the DACH markets more widely.
It is also worth mentioning that PCG decided to cooperate with us because of our extensive experience in conducting projects and cooperation with the German-speaking market. In the first period, we will focus on conducting a thorough market research and optimising the possibilities of using the ready-made solutions in German-speaking universities.
Currently, we are also working on a website for this project.

Providing dedicated modern solutions lies deep in our company's DNA. Since 2016, we have been trying to be a leader in the industry, which provides its customers with full support in processes that allow them to be modern and competitive. At VM.PL, even in times of pandemic, we gain new projects to implement, which motivate us to operate, but above all to continuous education. We know this very well with the example of the German language, we also know it in the case of technology and programming languages.
This month, VM.PL held a dedicated 3-day training, which was organised by Bottega company at the invitation of our employees. Moving mainly around Java, the participants broadened their knowledge of, among other things, patterns and antipatterns in microservices architecture, fault tolerance and resilience, quality assurance of dispersed systems and refactoring from distributed monolith to "real" microservices.
We implement our services, such as the Tech-Stack Update, Continous Integration and Continuous Deployment and many others, with the aid of nobody other than with the help of partners such as our employees. We guarantee the highest quality to our customers because we employ the best specialists. However, they cannot simply be invited to work. We also need to make sure that they keep developing and are ready to propose ideal solutions tailored to the challenges they face in projects.
The training took place remotely using the Microsoft Teams platform, and as many as 9 of our developers took part in it. VM.PL covered the entire cost of the training and partially the time spent by the employees. We are glad that there were so many people willing to participate, which only proves even more the thesis that in order to offer the best quality services, it is necessary to constantly acquire knowledge.
The BEST Hacks hackathon 2020 organized by the student’s organization BEST Wroclaw at the Wroclaw University of Technology took place on 24 – 25 October 2020. Positive emotions connected with the event are still with us, and that's why it’s time to summarize them.
As a software company, and me as its CEO, we are happy that we had an opportunity to get to know future programmers – students of the Wroclaw University of Technology and to share our knowledge with them, give our tips, because we know how big of an impact on the innovations the young generation has. We want to share our experience in the new tech area, showing proper career paths. That’s why it is so important for us to direct our communication also to students, in the future they will certainly be welcomed in our company.

On special invitation, our German language teacher, Wolfgand Reinicke-Abel, who is also a sommelier, guided us through the German white and red wines.

On September 29th we will take part in Software Day 2020 conference in Vienna. This will be our first trip to this kind of event after a long break due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Software Day is organized annually by VÖSI - Association of the Austrian Software Industry. Last year, more than 200 industry experts attended. In 2020, the conference will also be organized in four parallel thematic tracks, namely science, business and industry content.
During the event we will have the honor to represent our local cluster, ITCorner. Our goal will be to establish new business contacts, which we hope will result in cooperation with other similar organizations from Austria.

It has been a year since we started working with mindsquare AG (https://mindsquare.de) based in Bielefeld. Our client is a consulting company specializing in creating dedicated software and technology consulting in SAP and Salesforce environments.
The company needed to create a platform for comprehensive production management for one of its customers in the food industry. The new system was to be built on the Salesforce platform. We provided a Salesforce specialist for the project, who had to fit in with the mindsquare idea, not only technically but also mentally.
Within a year from the beginning of work, a team consisting of the client's developers and our specialist has achieved the most important project objectives.
All modules from the old Salesforce version have been moved to the new one. In addition, the system has been extended with new functionalities for more efficient production management.

In May we organized another online meetup, this time with EDISONDA company from Cracow. Together with the speaker Katarzyna Spytkowska we searched for the answer: where, when, and in what contexts the care of UX is particularly useful and what benefits it provides in every area of company reality. We have learned what value User Experience brings to business and everyday life.
The topic turned out to be a very catchy one, and there was a record interest as almost 200 people joined us! We are glad that our webinars attract more and more participants and we hope there will be equally large (or even bigger!) interest in the future. Need for change - starting from the Board
The year was 2016. I sat on the board with the other two people with sales and legal background as the only "that programmer" among them. I’d been observing what was happening, how the company worked, and I'd seen that crisis that'd got us, feeling that we couldn't work in the same way anymore. I decided that a revolution in management must take place and I took up this challenge to encourage my colleagues to understand my way of thinking. I wanted them to believe that Agile in VM.PL is possible. However, I knew that even the best Scrum Master or Agile Coach couldn't make the expected changes if the transformation doesn't start with the management and owners of the companies. Only a well-thought-out strategy, which is supported by the management can make a positive difference and increase productivity.
This situation reminded me of the times when I was a developer myself and we were making the first framework to speed up the development of portals for other clients to provide a significantly greater security. We started our work in the morning and we stayed at the office until late at night, finishing it. It wasn't because someone promised us a bonus, but because we loved what we did. Spotting these aspects was crucial for me in the context of the need to carry out the Agile transformation in our company as well. The rapidly changing reality and greater self-awareness of employees was the basis for modifying the previously practiced methodology. We had to become consistent and adapt our business model to the requirements of the modern world.
In March VM.PL organized its first online webinar on web security. Under the controversial topic "How to break into my boss's Facebook account?" we hid important issues that we pay attention to in our daily work: data security, employee training, protection against attacks. We want our clients to feel confident with us because we are professionals in what we do.

the webinar and numerous questions asked, which prove that this is an important and interesting

The German language course for IT representatives organized by VM.PL has already been held twice. The classes took place in our company office. The year of 2020 surprised all with the difficulties that prevented us from undertaking this task in its classic form. Therefore, on April 21., a fully remote course began.
The interest was greater than we expected. We've decided to open an additional group so that even more IT specialists could join in with our teachers.
As a result - we created two groups with level B2 and one with level B1. In total 15 people learn German using the Microsoft Teams platform.
As if that wasn't enough, this year we have additionally provided students with our own free coursebook to learn professional German in the IT business. It was prepared by our teachers, which is a guarantee of quality. We hope that the next editions will be as same popular as now and even more people will see the value of German in the IT industry.
A few months ago we started a cooperation with Munich based Solarius GmbH on a new, fascinating project!
Our new client is active in the field of metrology and control engineering. The company specializes in providing precision systems for 2D and 3D non-contact surface inspection, measurement, analysis, and visualization. Solarius produces, among other products, precise measurement machines for semiconductors, including wafers with chips and this is the area in which we are supporting them.
The aim of the project is creating a UI (User Interface) for a completely new type of client’s tool called SIMP. The software that we are preparing together with the German team will ultimately control this machine and define the measurement schemes.
We are programming it in C#, using WPF. Importantly, it will be the first such UI in the company’s offer.
It is worth mentioning that we managed to start the project very quickly – only 2 weeks after the first enquiry from the client. So far the enterprise has been developing very dynamically and our partner is satisfied with the progress made by our programmers. Nevertheless, our cooperation with Solarius is not finished yet. We are going to continue our work on its maintenance and further development and we are very glad about this!
Our own disaster recovery scenario
When you cannot visit your office and suddenly all team members have to work from home, you face a major issue. Unless you are already prepared. In a military you drill and exercise until dealing a crisis scenario turns into routine. This allows quick reaction. We did it for distributed work.
Working as a nearshore partner already requires to establish an effective remote collaboration. It's not only driven by tools and processes, but much more by trust and the right approach. Building informal communication channel with our customer is one of this.
Daily routines and informal communication help
Our daily routine in COVID-19 time, while working from home, looks very much the same as when we gather in the office. We start usually at 9:00 with some kind of stand-up meeting, to make sure we all have something to work on. And to resolve all obstacles if any. It all happens as web conference on Teams. Internet broadband providers are also delivering high quality, so it's not lagging. We care about communication in our team. Arranging a virtual coffee-break is good idea to get typical water-cooler talk replacement. All team members prepare a hot drink of choice and meet on Teams.
Due to the current situation related to the coronavirus pandemic, we have recently received many inquiries from schools in Poland and Germany about new solutions supporting online teaching. In response, we created an e-learning platform based on Moodle software.
For over 15 years we have been cooperating with various schools and institutions in the education sector. We have developed a number of products (e. g. digital schoolbooks, diagnostic systems) for such institutions and publishers as: Macmillan, Pearson, Nowa Era (Sanoma Group) or German TestDaf Institut. They support the work not only teachers’ but also of pupils’ work, as well as school management. In the meantime, we have also gained experience in Moodle, creating a comprehensive e-learning portal (including courses) for the Marshal Office of the West Pomeranian Region (https://elearning.wzp.pl).
On March 25th, obligatory online learning was introduced in Poland due to the closure of schools. In a short period of time, teachers were forced to carry out a remote learning programme. Our system allows all those involved to learn and work effectively in this difficult time and thus overcome the crisis.
As part of our services, we offer the implementation of our own comprehensive e-learning platform, also in German.

Recently we have started a brand new project for Welotec from Laer. This is a company we have been working with for a long time now. They specialize in developing products and systems in the field of industrial communication and automation.
As part of our cooperation we have already succeeded in creating for the client a system for remote management of routers and industrial equipment. The details of this project are described in the Case Study.
Thanks to the successful results of our team's efforts so far, Welotec have decided to extend their cooperation with us onto a completely new project. This time our task is to create a new company website.
In December last year we visited our client in their office to take part in dedicated workshops. It allowed us to get to know the exact needs and assumptions of the project. The main goal of the new website is to improve the user navigation experience and increase its intuitiveness. We want to add that we invited a befriended digital agency mohi.to to cooperate on this project. We are really happy that we can work together to achieve the goal.
So far, we have made a trial design, which has been accepted by the client. The next step is preparing a mock-up of the whole website and the final graphic design. The project should be ready around the middle of this year. We are looking forward to the final results of our work!
Recently we began work on a completely new project for a client of Systema – Art of Automation located in Dresden, Germany. Systema’s client is manufacturing a new generation of Radio Frequency Front End (RFFE) filtering solutions for its 5G portfolio that will further enable OEM customers to design thin, high-performance, battery-efficient 5G multimode devices at scale and on time.
Our partner from Dresden is one of the leading providers of engineering, operational and supply chain services. Their core business is supporting customers in integrating, automating, optimizing and visualizing production environments.
Our qualified developers are working (together with the team based in Dresden and Regensburg) on production process management software for the manufacturing of semiconductor devices. The main goal of the project is to automate the production line: device integration, production process control, and material management.
The project is long-term; the expected duration is up to 5 years. The new software is intended to help in complex production management. During its development we will be using a large number of technologies such as: Java, .NET, SAP, MS SQL, Angular and message-oriented middleware.
Despite the fact that the project has been running for a relatively short time, the cooperation is going very well and the whole process is moving forward dynamically. We are very satisfied with the initial effects!
At the beginning of December we had the honour to participate as a partner in the Polish-Bavarian Christmas Evening at the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich.
Organised by the Polish-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Poland), the event has an eight-year tradition and occupies an unquestionably important place in the calendar of pre-Christmas meetings in Munich. Every year it is attended by nearly 150 representatives of companies, clusters, associations, organisations and economic institutions from Poland and Germany.
At the beginning we had the pleasure to listen to a beautiful concert of classical music performed by a Polish string trio.
In the second part of the evening we participated in a party, during which we could talk to other guests about business and other topics.
It is worth noting that this annual event is organised in cooperation with the Polish Consulate General in Munich. In addition, this year the meeting was held under the honorary patronage of the Deputy Prime Minister of Bavaria and the Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, Mr. Hubert Aiwanger.

The German language in the IT industry is usually unappreciated even though it gives so many opportunities.

A few months ago we’ve started brand new project with Carano Software Solutions Gmbh. This IT company from Berlin is one of the leading suppliers of professional fleet software. They develop the latest solutions in the field of fleet management and renting, as well as car trade.
Our qualified Java developers has been working (together with the team in Berlin) on significantly developing their product – a web app which enables the configuration and financing of vehicles, such as cars or scooters.
Thanks to our regular visits in the client’s headquarters our cooperation is smooth and the whole process of implementing new functionalities (such as the ability to view information about vehicles and charts of current expenses) in the application is constantly moving forward.
We’re glad that we’re taking part in this immersive project and we can’t wait to discover new challenges related to its development.

Last week, we went to Berlin with other members of ITCorner (cluster from Wrocław) to participate in an event organized by SIBB. We started the meeting with a visit to the Berlin Town Hall, where Jakub Orczyk, a member of our board, talked about the activities of ITCorner as part of the "Zwei Länder eine Wirtschaft" panel (Two countries, one economy). He also presented the history of VM.PL, which perfectly shows the benefits of cooperation between Polish and German companies.
After the speech, we went to Berlin Partner für Wirtschaft und Technologie GmbH - an organization cooperating with the Senate of Berlin and almost 300 Berlin companies.
We ended the day with participation in SIBB Summit, where Jakub Orczyk was able to speak again, this time about Wrocław and ITCorner.
This trip was extremely fruitful for us, because we had the opportunity not only to promote our company and SIBB, of which we are members, but we could also meet many interesting people associated with the IT industry, who are connected by curiosity and the desire for knowledge.
However, as always, we do not stop and we are already preparing for an October visit of SIBB partners as part of the edition "Made in Wrocław", organized by Wroclaw Agglomeration Development Agency (ARAW). This will be an excellent opportunity to learn about the products of well-known brands and local startups, as well as to meet enthusiasts of the latest technologies and to expand our network of contacts.

At the beginning of the year, we’ve decided to assist in an exciting project for a German company which operates in industry 4.0.
Apronic is a startup from Emsdetten that modernizes and accelerates the production processes of the factories. Apronic offers its customers a very specialized system for collecting data from production lines, which measures performance in real time. These data significantly improve the efficiency of the production process.
We formed a team composed of our three experienced developers and a project manager to help create new features that are designed for specific customer orders.
Our task was also to modernize the Apronic’s system so that at the production lines, the customer could run our application directly at the station without using the operating system. We have also refactored the code to make it more modern and efficient. We focused on consultations in order to choose the best solutions.
The customer payed us a visit in February in our office to discuss new tasks and strengthen our relationship. The result of this meeting is the acceleration of work and adding a new developer to the team.
Our cooperation is very dynamic and beginning to bear fruit. We are looking forward to further challenges and successes connected with the project!

We will start in the City Hall with a meeting of German-Polish organizations from the business environment, the topic of which will be: "Two countries - one economy". A year has passed since Łukasz Borzęcki – our company’s CEO, became a member of the ITCorner’s board. This is a society which unites people connected with the new technologies market of Lower Silesia. Its main goal is to strengthen the communication between small and medium-sized companies which want to create innovative IT projects.
During this time, Łukasz has been actively participating in the board’s activities, being in charge of finding new members (13 new companies have joined) who have brought in valuable knowledge and fresh ideas to IT Corner. He performs a similar function in VM.PL, where he finds valuable employees who believe in what we do and stay with us for longer.
Łukasz has also organised many meetings which focused on the exchange of knowledge between people in the IT branch, where everyone could share their experiences and methods on how to run a business. The goal of the meetings was to inspire and encourage action.
Łukasz has been asked to talk about VM.PL’s history during the ITC Summit 2019 and explain how we managed to establish ourselves in the German market. He was one of several speakers who will share their knowledge with 300 entrepreneurs from every corner of Poland.
But the growing company needed more and more of the CEO’s time and attention. Łukasz had to take care of the recruitment process for the society and at the same time concentrate on the activities for his own company. Therefore, he was forced to take a difficult decision and thus he resigned from his membership of IT Corner’s board. This decision was not an easy one for either side, but Łukasz has met with the complete understanding of the board who know perfectly well how much of a responsibility having your own business on the market actually is.
However, Łukasz doesn’t want to part ways with IT Corner forever. In the future, he plans on returning to the society to again to take an active part in its inspiring activities. For now, Łukasz remains a member of the society and he’ll continue to support it for as long as he can.
This month we’ve joined forces with labor b designbüro – a design office from Dortmund, which helps other companies strengthen their brands and recognition thanks to modern branding strategy and design. Labor b designbüro also creates individual systems and websites.
Three of our very experienced colleagues specializing in the Drupal framework have joined their team in order to create a website for a well-known public research institutes in Germany. The goal of the website is to present the modern way in which the institute designs and implement projects.
On 4th March we went to Dortmund to participate in a kick-off week where we had the opportunity to learn the details of the project. Furthermore, with the labor b designbüro team we have developed the architecture of the site. We worked out what we have to do and planned the next steps.
Since then our developers have been working remotely from our office in Wrocław. At the current pace, the MVP version of the project should be completed by the end of April. We’re very glad that we can take part in the next immersive project which will broaden our knowledge and strengthen contacts with foreign companies.
The German language is playing an increasingly important role in the job market in Poland and in business. It is particularly visible in Wroclaw where every year there are more companies with German capital and those cooperating with our western neighbors. We are a perfect example – last year, up to 80% of our revenue came from German customers.
We know from experience that people who can speak German are extremely valued and sought in every industry, especially in IT. Our employees have been able to attend language classes in our office for several years. We have now decided to go out with such an initiative outside by organizing open German courses, addressed to all IT specialists.
The first attempt to fill the groups was a success and on February 12 we started the classes on two levels: B1 and B2.
Our courses are run by a native speaker and are primarily focused on the practical aspect - improving communication and learning industry vocabulary. For the convenience of our participants, classes take place twice a week in the evening.
So far, we've received very positive reviews. In a few months we plan to launch another round of enrolment. We are now encouraging everyone to participate. This is an excellent opportunity to improve your language skills and thus increase your value on the job market. We will keep you updated on our website and social media profiles on the formation of new groups.

VM.PL never stops! We are happy to announce that we have just officially become a member of SIBB – a German association of enterprises and organizations from the IT industry in Berlin and Brandenburg. The main mission of SIBB is to build a cooperation network between companies, exchange information and transfer of knowledge and technology.
The activities of the association are well known to us as we have been actively involved in its various activities for a long time (2+ years). The official membership will allow us to strengthen cooperation with clients on the German market from this region as well as to acquire and develop new projects.
Joining SIBB shows , above all, that the German market is of key importance to us. In the future, we would like to continue to focus our activities on it – develop cooperation with both our existing clients and acquire new ones. We have no doubt that the association will actively support us in our intentions and the membership itself will improve our image of a reliable partner on the German market.
We are optimistic about the New Year and waiting impatiently for the new challenges ahead!

Recently we have undertaken a comprehensive project for another German client, Welotec, a company from Laer (North Rhine-Westphalia) which had been looking for an experienced team to create new solutions.
Welotec specialises in the development of products and systems in the field of industrial communication and automation. Its main activities focus on 4 core sectors: Smart Energy, Smart City, Smart Farming and Smart Industry.
Our goal is to create a software for managing a large number of routers installed in various intelligent devices and machines (including agricultural).
Thanks to the application administrators will be able to track the behaviours and actions of each router. Furthermore, their configuration and firmware will stay up-to-date all the time.
As a final note, it’s worth mentioning that this is our first large-scale project which is being carried out in Lublin. A whole team of developers including the Project Manager is working there on site, while the Customer Success Manager supervises the whole operation from our main headquarters in Wrocław.
We are really satisfied that we have a chance to implement such a challenging project for an undoubtedly interesting and forward-looking sector. We sincerely hope that this is just the first of many such projects for us.

After many years of existence we have just made the next big step forward, officially opening a new branch on the other side of Poland, in the centre of Lublin.
An office in this location opens up the opportunity for us to collaborate with developers in this region. This solution means we now have a greater degree of flexibility and can employ more developers at one time, especially as the new office is located near the main railway station, which is attractive to potential employees.
We have started with three developers who are now working with our foreign clients on international projects. Lublin is also well connected with European cities so we can meet with foreign clients as easily as from Wrocław.

It smells like next meetup at VM.PL! This time our team is mixing the aroma of finest pizza and craft beers with something completely opposite... CODE SMELL.
During the meetup VM-er Paweł will guide participants through the idea of code smell, explain the most useful tips he gathered from Martin Fowler's book: Refactoring - Improving the Design of Existing Code with his own examples of solution to the problem.

Spring has brought us lots of sun and new tasks (even though we are open for new challenges even in late autumn). Our team has been busy lately, we recently paid a little visit to Luxembourg to start a new project in Laravel.
Two gifted VM.PL devs are supporting the development of Doctena, an app used to searching specialist doctors and book medical appointments online. This app is widely used in Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland and Germany.
It’s getting not only more and more popular but also better and better as we speak. As of today, every month the app serves approximately one million bookings for more than 10 000 medical experts. With numbers as high as these, one can easily guess that we are talking about the biggest application in its field in Europe. We, on the other hand, are very proud and excited to have the privilege to take part in such a huge, important exciting project.
Two events in two 2 months – it was definitely an intensive and very challenging time for everyone in our team.
The second Docker workshop - IQ@SIBB: DOCKER 101 – practical introduction, was the first event ever we organized abroad . Thanks to our German partner – Sibb Ev. we had the pleasure to conduct the workshop in Berlin city centre.

It could be just another project, but it's always a NEW CHALLENGE. We could just tell you, but again we are EXCITED to announce. It seems this time VM.PL is going to celebrate Oktoberfest a little bit earlier.
That’s because of our German and Java speaking super talented VM-er who travelled to Munich on January to kick-start a new project.
He will be supporting a leading fintech company in delivering high-end, individually tailored IT solutions for key financial institutions in Germany. Our employee will be staying there until March and then continue working from our Wroclaw office.
We are really proud of it.

Above all, huge thanks to our host – Łukasz Urbański and all VM-ers involved in organizing the event. We would like to thank all participants – both present at the meeting and watching live streaming via our Facebook and Youtube channel. This is the greatest reason why we are jumping with joy! Not to mention big amount of 150 people interested in the event.
It was definitely a successful meetup for the whole VM.PL team and participants (which we found out from the positive feedback we’ve got).
